Chapter Twelve
Bei watched Nell’s eyes roll back. Catching her as she collapsed, he gently laid her on the floor between the paladin and Richmond and caressed the bruise forming on her chin. She would recover soon; he would take a bit longer. He had wanted to be free but not at this price, not at Nell’s expense.
The woman was far too willing to give up everything she valued for him.
He found it quite irritating, especially when his soldier’s training agreed with her decision. He snorted. Some damn soldier. He should have anticipated the Skaterian’s usurping his control through the WA. The Bastard had used the same trick against the Syn-En when he’d kidnapped Nell a month ago.
Believing Terra Dos free of ETs couldn’t excuse his negligence. He’d damn well put the whole fleet at risk. A feeling of anxiety cut through his self-reproach. Where the hell had that come from? Surely not the obscene emptiness inside his skull. Moments later, an image of a long, empty corridor filled his head. Outside the cell, a click of nails against stone accompanied the soft pad of feet. Good, the animals had not left. “Iggy?”
The animal decloaked near the entrance of the cell. She shook her head and the motion transmitted from her feathered head out the tip of her furry tail.
“What the enemy’s ETA?” With trembling hands, Bei brushed aside his wife’s hair then flipped open his index finger. A cylindrical laser cutter emerged from his finger toolkit. Laying the cutter’s tip against the middle neuralwires of the blue circuit, he quickly severed her connection to the WA. What had she experienced in that moment before he’d clipped her on the jaw, knocking her unconscious? The helplessness, the anger, the fear? Sweat beaded his forehead.
The Syn-En Handbook hadn’t covered being a Prisoner of War. Hell for all Bei knew, he was the first of his kind taken captive. He damn well wouldn’t be remembered for that. Isolating his doubts, he shoved them in a quarantined area of his cerebral interface.
Iggy’s yellow eyes closed for a moment. The corridor shimmered in Bei’s mind. This time, humanoid shadows danced along the wall.
Damn. If they tried to leave now, they’d be slaughtered in the hallway. Was there another way out of this prison? The only route he knew was presently clogged with enemy combatants. He strode out of the cell. The left corridor dead-ended but the right led to the jail’s entrance. The enemy would have to come through that opening. He’d defended more vulnerable positions. Of course, he’d had other Syn-Ens guarding his back.
This time, three of his men fought for the enemy.
Well, he’d just have to adapt. Even though three of the hostiles wore the faces of soldiers he’d known and fought alongside, didn’t make them his men. An enemy controlled them. It would be a mercy to destroy their bodies, freeing their spirits trapped within.
